I may need a hysterectomy for fobroids. How long will the hospital stay be and what are the side effects?

I will be a partial if it is recommneded. My periods are so heavy that I wear 2 tampons and an overnight! This has been going on about 3.5 years and I am so tired of it. My sister had one done due to fibroids as well. I was bleeding so bad one day that I started shaking. Sometimes I have a FLOOD and I always carry a change of clothes in my trunk. I will take any suggestions. I am also anemic.

The best resource would be your sister, since she has had a hysterectomy already. Every woman’s body & experience is different including yours.
I had the same problem and had a full hysterectomy about 5 years ago. And, I have not regretted it for a minute!
I was in the hospital for about 24 hours, overnight.
I had mine done with just 3 tiny incisions..one in my belly button, one way down low below the hair line, and a one-inch one vertically in the middle (where a C-section scar might be. Cameras and lights etc, were used to do the surgery, and then my uterus, etc was removed vaginally.
I had very little pain, a little gas/swelling since they pump air into you to make it easier for the camera to see. Other than that I felt fine in just a couple of days.
Like you I was anemic, shaky, weak and miserable for months before I had the surgery, and within just a few days, I felt better than I had in a long time.
I chose not to use any hormone replacement, but you and your Dr will have to make the right choice for you.
SO, don’t worry, it’s not bad at all, and you will be your old self before you know it.
My mom had it done and she was in the hospital for 5 days but normally it’s only 3. the only reason she was in for 5 is because the doctor knows her too well and she wouldn’t have rested.
She was hurtin’ for a couple weeks afterwards, she had to take things easy- if you can get a mother or good friend to stay with you to help you out- that’s the best idea.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy a few months ago, and was in the hospital 2 nights. I had very little pain while in the hospital (they keep you on painkillers), and by the time I went home, I didn’t need the heavy-duty drugs any more. Just something that is like an extra dose of Advil. All of my stitches were internal, so I didn’t have any of the problems some women have with scarring, and painful/itchy stitches on the abdomen. The main thing that you will have trouble with is not being able to lift anything heavier than about 10 lbs. for six weeks. This includes vacuuming, laundry, yard work, pushing a grocery cart, lifting kids, etc. It’s hard to keep yourself from doing all these things, because you will probably be feeling pretty good fairly quickly, but it’s important to let yourself heal. If you can keep your ovaries, that’s a good thing, because you won’t need hormone replacement. Good luck!
