IVF and Child-Bearing and Aging Women, Pregnant Past Menopause?

Shouldn’t women have the right to individually choose?…Do you think Dr.’s or Society should be able to decide what age is an appropriate cut-off for IVF treatments? It’s being reported that the 66 year old women who bore twins two years ago has passed away, now people are up-in-arms so to speak about how humane it was for a Dr to give her twins and now those two-year-olds have no mother…. What do you think?

As a childless not so young woman who cannot conceive without IVF I cannot say how I would feel if I were past menopause, had a chance of success, and childless or had a chance at making a sibling for a child I already had. I would certainly hope no one would take that choice away from me but I would have a very hard time finding a reproductive endocrinologist to treat me. Most clinics do have a cutoff date. Long ago women were having big families and had their 9th, 10th child much later in life. My grandmother did. As long as the woman was healthy and has a good support system she and the child will be fine. I would rather have a older woman have a baby than a 15 year old. I can tell you I have known a few teenage mothers who should have had their children taken from them. People make the argument that an older woman won’t live to see her child graduate, marry, and have children but who is to say that can’t happen to a younger woman? And, why are people screaming about older women having children and not about old men who are having children? Bottom line, it’s her business.
I think there is a reason why nature cuts off one’s reproductive system at a certain age. This is it.
yes i think there should be a cut off age as well… not only can some of them become motherless, there are a lot more health issues and risks for the mother and children when the parents are older.. why risk it?
Considering how few women past menopause do this in the first place, it’s mind boggling that anybody gives a rip. Sadly, it is very likely that the fertility drugs she was taking actually created the tumor that eventually killed her.
I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. Those twins will be well cared for by family. She was certainly not financially destitute and neither are they. Compare that with how many children are raised by drug addict mothers or removed from unfit parental homes.
Yes i do agree there should be a cut off age, some people are selfish or just not the educated about problems with pregnancy when you are older. After you hit your early 40′s the risk of your baby having a minor or major problem skyrockets. I think that most things in life society should stay out of, but when it comes to the welfare of a child, and it can be prevented i think society should step in, and follow an age or criteria.
Any outrage is profoundly sexist. Men routinely father children into their 50s and sometimes into their 60s or even 70s (e.g., a second marriage to a younger woman).

No one questions the "humanity" of that decision, but I’ve no doubt that there would bel outrage if a 62-year-old woman of substantial wealth decided to have a baby.
The real question is whether the children will be cared for, regardless of the age of both parents.
