I’ve been reading articles with evolutionary explanations for human behaviors, and just about every article gives off the impression that men are naturally polygamous, cheat on their older wives because they can no longer reproduce and are therefore sexually useless, are justified in dropping their older partners for younger, more fertile ones, etc.

It sounds an awful lot as if they’re basically implying that women are only worthy of male affections as long as they’re young with perky breasts.

How, then, does evolutionary theory account for women still desiring male companionship after they are older and their children have left the house, women still wanting to have sex after menopause, and the fact that women live longer despite being useless once their reproductive careers are over?

For example:

"Many believe that men go through a midlife crisis when they are in middle age. Not quite. Many middle-aged men do go through midlife crises, but it’s not because they are middle-aged. It’s because their wives are. From the evolutionary psychological perspective, a man’s midlife crisis is precipitated by his wife’s imminent menopause and end of her reproductive career, and thus his renewed need to attract younger women. Accordingly, a 50-year-old man married to a 25-year-old woman would not go through a midlife crisis, while a 25-year-old man married to a 50-year-old woman would, just like a more typical 50-year-old man married to a 50-year-old woman. It’s not his midlife that matters; it’s hers. When he buys a shiny-red sports car, he’s not trying to regain his youth; he’s trying to attract young women to replace his menopausal wife by trumpeting his flash and cash."

"Until very recently, it was a mystery to evolutionary psychology why men prefer women with large breasts, since the size of a woman’s breasts has no relationship to her ability to lactate. But Harvard anthropologist Frank Marlowe contends that larger, and hence heavier, breasts sag more conspicuously with age than do smaller breasts. Thus they make it easier for men to judge a woman’s age (and her reproductive value) by sight—suggesting why men find women with large breasts more attractive."

Did you see any benefit or side effects?
Please state your dosage.

I am a 35 yr old woman, and I am particularly worried about side effects such as facial hair, etc.

My gynecologist is thinking I may need a hysterectomy involving just the removal of my uterus as I do not have my left ovary or tube. I am thinking why don’t he just take the right ovary and tube while he is in there. I am a 38 yr old woman who has had female organ trouble since menstruals started at age 12. What is the best route to go? I have had somewhat of mood swings when I had the left tube and ovary removed.

43 year old woman, who recently is having periods every 2 weeks, and now vaginal itching in between periods is starting to occur, could it be from taking pain pills?

Heavy/Painful menstual cycle?

My menstrual cycle is weird.

It’s irregular, most times lasts longer than a week, (the record is three) and is really embarassing because it’s so heavy and unpredictable. I keep ‘personals’ with me all the time, and there’s always a change of clothes in my car, just in case, but it’s really just…embarassing.

I get huge blood clots, it almost looks like chunks of my uterus are coming out, and it’s very painful. It feels like someone’s ripping out my intestines and tying them in knots. Most of the time, it’s way too painful for me to move much, and I take Ibuprofin like candy, but I still move around like an arthritic old woman.

I’ve been to the Gyno, but she says the pain is normal, and I’m just exaggerating it, and all girls have some issues with blood clots. She brushes off all my questions like they’re nothing, while I’m pale and sick looking from the pain and the pills and the bleeding.

I’m not a ‘free spirit’ by any means, so I know it can’t be an ‘invasive’ issue.

I am a 52 year old woman in peri-menopause stage. I have been drinking soy milk for the past two years and I have just been diagnosed with a medium to large fibroid. My understanding is that Fibroids feed off of estrogen. Are the phytoestrogens in soy milk linked to increased growth of my fibroid tumor?

Is it so unusual to enjoy a gynecological exam?

I’m a 25 year old woman, and I’ve always enjoyed going to the gynecologist. I know most women say they hate it, but I’m wondering if it is really all that unusual to sort of like it.

Postmenopausal vaginal bleeding?

A 51-year-old woman who had her last period in April 2008. had some bleeding this morning.
She isn’t spotting now. She saw the blood when she wiped after urinating.
First time it was like wiping after urinating when in the period; but the second time it was much less, and so is the third time.
I was wondering what may cause the postmenopausal bleeding… Is it serious or can it be just a hormonal disturbance?
She scheduled a doc’s appointment for tomorrow morning, but I’m very concerned and I was wondering if you can help me out a bit with your suggestions or experiences.
The woman in question is my Mom.

Thank you in advance.

A 20 year old woman had her ovaries removed after she got ovarian cancer. She healed up successfully and is healthy now. Without ovaries, does she still have a menstrual cycle? Or without them, does she no longer have that because they were what governed the hormones responsible for menstruation?

I have had this issue for years and I’m currently seeing doctors at New England Med.Ctr. in Boston. I see an allergist and an ear nose and throat guy. We’ve tried all sorts of meds and eliminating some foods, but I still can’t taste or smell. My doc mentioned hormones. any ideas? I’m a 48 year old woman who uses bio identical hormone cream for peri menopause symptoms.

Some people say that the good side to it is she does not have to worry about pregnancy and child birth and that child birth at an old age is dangerous and can kill an old woman in labor. Some use artificial insemination and do die later after giving birth.

Causes of low testosterone in a young woman?

My doctor just told me that, after my blood test, my testosterone levels are very low. Which explains why I have no energy, can’t lose weight, and have no sex drive. But, I’m only 23 years old! I have a healthy life style and these symptoms just hit me like a ton of bricks! I also have an underactive thyroid. Are these 2 things related? What can cause a 23 year old woman to have low testosterone? Does this mean I’m going through early menopause? I have no symptoms of early menopause. I’m just so confused about this and of course my doctor is out of town. Any information would help.

How long should the recovery time be from a hysterectomy(removed uterus, tubes, ovaries and cervix) be for a 52 year old woman? My M-I-L had one last wednesday and she was released from the hospital on Sat. She is still in quite a bit of pain and is barely walking around, she just gets up to go to the bathroom. She is also on oral estrogen to help with the surgical menopause. Is the recovery alot slower because she is older? I am concerned that she should be up and about more. Any info to help enlighten me please.

I need help?

Am a 42 year old woman in perimenopause.I have been on treadmill faithfully 8 weeks for 45-55 min 6 days a week. Warm up 5 min (2 min @ 2.8mph and 3 min @ 3.2 mph) then do 35 min (16 min@ 4.6 mph jog and rest at 3.6 mph, jog time is not all at once..is 3.5 min X 4 +2 min with walking breaks in between). Do a five min cool down same as warm up;total distance usually 2.93 miles. Can’t seem to get my heart rate up beyond 75bpm even during the jog times; yesterday I increased my mph during jog to 5.7 and still didn’t get it to target heart rate (115-140) I already limit starchy carbs. I have been measuring target areas, (arm flab, waist, upper hips, lower hips, chest and top of thigh) and in 8 weeks very little improvement in anything; don’t have scale, but weight not dropping, either. Nothing moves..Between July 2003-Feb 2006 lost 65 lbs. on Atkins with virtually no exercise, gained 20 back with new man who likes meat and potatoes..now married..Getting hopeless..Please help
